The Surathkal Initiative, led by our dedicated NITK Surathkal students, is a heartfelt effort to bring value-based education, creativity, and joy into the lives of children studying in local government schools, including Kannada medium schools in and around Surathkal.
The core idea of this initiative is simple yet powerful — to connect with children beyond textbooks and help them grow emotionally, morally, and creatively. The NITK students regularly visited government schools and conducted sessions that were meaningful, engaging, and full of positive energy.
Initially, the sessions were conducted every Saturday, allowing for consistent interaction with the children. Later, keeping in mind the tight academic schedules of college students, approaching exams of school students and the availability and support of the schools, the frequency was adjusted. This flexibility ensured that the quality of engagement remained high and the program continued smoothly with the cooperation of school authorities.
The activities conducted under this initiative went far beyond classroom-style teaching. The team organised cultural and creative programs such as:
- Painting competitions
- Storytelling sessions
- Craft activities
- Singing and dancing activities
These activities gave children a chance to express themselves freely, discover their talents, and gain confidence. Many children who were initially shy slowly opened up, participated actively, and enjoyed being on stage or sharing their creativity with others.
Along with creative activities, the NITK students also focused on value education. Through stories, conversations, and simple examples, they spoke about honesty, discipline, respect, teamwork, cleanliness, and responsibility. Children were encouraged to reflect on their daily actions and understand how small habits can shape their future.
One of the most joyful aspects of this initiative was the games and group activities conducted with the children. Playing games together helped break barriers, build trust, and create a friendly bond between the students and volunteers. The children felt comfortable, happy, and truly connected. The school atmosphere during these sessions became lively, energetic, and full of laughter.
The team also engaged children in group singing, dancing, and taking simple vows to follow good values in their daily lives. These moments were powerful — when children stood together and promised to speak the truth, respect others, help their friends, and do the right thing. Such experiences leave a deep impression on young minds.
The children’s response to the Surathkal Initiative was extremely positive. They looked forward to these sessions, participated with excitement, and expressed happiness through smiles, laughter, and active involvement. For many children, these sessions became a break from routine, a space where learning felt joyful and meaningful.
During the sessions, special attention was given to shy and hesitant students who usually stayed quiet or avoided participation. The NITK volunteers gently encouraged them to speak, express their thoughts, and take part in activities at their own pace. Simple exercises like introducing themselves, narrating short stories, sharing opinions, and speaking in small groups helped build their confidence. Over time, many of these children began to speak more freely, stand in front of others without fear, and participate with growing self-belief. By encouraging public speaking from an early age, we helped children overcome fear, improve communication skills, and develop the confidence needed to express themselves clearly in school and in life.
This initiative also helped bridge the gap between higher education institutions and local communities. The NITK students not only shared their time and energy but also became role models for the children — showing them what discipline, dedication, and service look like in real life.
Through the Surathkal Initiative, we believe we are nurturing more than skills — we are nurturing confidence, values, creativity, and hope. Even small interactions, when done with sincerity, can create long-lasting impact. This initiative stands as a reminder that when young volunteers come forward to serve, change becomes possible at the grassroots level.
